| Inhalable Insulin |
Adults who use insulin to control type 1 and type 2 diabetes have a new treatment option with the recent FDA approval of inhalable insulin. This is the most sweeping advance in diabetes self-care since the discovery of the hormone in 1921.
Exubera® (insulin human [rDNA origin]) Inhalation Powder will be sold by Pfizer Inc.. The powder is placed in a 4 oz. Exubera inhaler about the size of an eyeglasses case. A puff of air forces the powder into the lungs, where it rapidly enters the bloodstream prior to the user eating a meal.
Inhalable insulin may replace or supplement the short-acting injections required of many of America's 21 million diabetics. In clinical trials, Exubera was as effective as short-acting insulin injections. Adults with type 1 diabetes can use Exubera in combination with longer-acting insulin. Adults with type 2 diabetes can use inhaled insulin alone or with diabetes pills or longer-acting insulin.
Many diabetics use insulin because their own bodies are unable to manufacture or control blood sugar levels. In individuals with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas cannot make insulin; with type 2 diabetes, the body cannot manage blood sugar levels adequately.
Uncontrolled blood sugar can cause serious health risks including blindness, impotence, limb amputation, kidney failure and heart attack. Nevertheless, many diabetics fail to control their blood sugar due to the inconvenience of pricking their fingers to test blood sugar levels and either injecting themselves with insulin or wearing an insulin pump. The Exubera insulin inhalation device is likely to be a welcome change for diabetics.
Inhaled insulin appears to be safe for short-term use. Because it may affect lung function, Exubera will not be prescribed to patients prior to the completion of a function test. Exubera is not recommended for smokers or diabetics with chronic lung disease including asthma, obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema.
A Pfizer-sponsored study showed that diabetics prefer this device to needles by a wide margin. The product was tested in more than 2,500 individuals prior to its approval.
